🎨 How to color it

Layer the humpback in deep teal and slate blue, give the sun a warm marigold glow, and fill the curling waves with sea-glass aqua and cobalt. Use sharp pencils or fine-tip markers to follow the many narrow panes, coloring one curved section at a time so the black “lead” lines stay crisp. For a luminous stained-glass effect, fade the sunbeams from pale yellow near the circle to cool turquoise where they touch the whale’s back.

At the rim of the glasswater trench, Asha invented a game: catch one whole sunbeam on her back and keep it from slipping into the dark. The water smelled of salt and cold stone; above her, the noon light came down in a single white spear. She held still, enormous with brightness, until a hidden shrimp tapped three times inside a crack. Asha laughed, and the beam shattered into amber, blue, green, and silver paths, each one finding a fish, a shell, a sleeping eel. Ever since, sunlight enters the sea in pieces, because Asha’s joy was too large to keep whole.
