Every evening, Selka counted the same seven fronds and turned back before the eighth, where the kelp braided itself into a green arch that clicked softly in the tide. She had made a private challenge: swim through once without closing her eyes. Until one day the water smelled of crushed cucumber and rain, and the arch was gone—pulled into a tall, shining maze by a bloom of clear drifting bells.
Because of that, Selka followed the bell shadows instead of her old count. Because of that, the forest opened above her in long ribbons, each leaf combing light over her back like cool fingers. At the narrowest place she whispered, “Steady,” and let one flipper brush the strange stems. They did not sting. They chimed.
Finally, she crossed where the arch had been and found the eighth frond waiting beyond it, bent like a question mark. Selka did not turn back; she circled once in the dim green hush, carrying the soft click of seven fronds into the unknown eighth.
