Every day, Ivy dashed through the old orchard gate with seed packets rattling in her satchel, racing the bees to the fair bell. She knew the quickest way: under the rose arch, past the lavender, over the flat stones. Until one day, a bronze wren landed on the iron scrollwork and clicked, “Not yet.” Its metal feathers smelled like rain on pennies.
Because of that, Ivy bounced on her toes while the path ahead filled with thorny shadows. Because of that, she noticed the roses turning one by one, opening like little signal flags in the wind. At last the wren sprang into the air, and the arch hummed bright gold. Ivy ran through just as petals whirled behind her, carrying her packets straight to the bell. Next time you pass the curled iron and waiting roses, can you spot where the bronze wren tapped, not yet?
