Hedgehogs are small mammals best known for their spines, which are made of keratin, the same tough material found in human fingernails. Those spines are not poisonous or barbed; they work like a prickly shield when the hedgehog curls into a tight ball. Most hedgehogs are active at night, using a strong sense of smell and hearing to search for beetles, caterpillars, worms, and slugs. Baby hedgehogs are called hoglets, and their first spines are soft at birth before firming up as they grow. Wild hedgehogs live in parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa, depending on the species.

Coloring tips

For a classic hedgehog palette, use warm brown for the spines, sandy tan or cream for the face and belly, dark chocolate or black for the nose and eyes, soft pink for the ears and paws, and olive greens plus russet leaves for the garden around it.
