🎨 How to color it

Color the hedgehog’s face warm chestnut, its teardrop-shaped quills dark cocoa, the jack-o’-lantern glowing pumpkin orange, and the bat smoky violet. Use sharp colored pencils for the many quill marks and the pumpkin’s carved teeth, working slowly from the outer lines toward the centers. Try a cool blue-gray wash inside the pointed arches so the orange pumpkin feels like the one warm lantern in a spooky hall.

Each evening, Vesper rolled one carved pumpkin to the broken chapel window and watched the moon slide through the pointed stone arches. He wanted to join the Night-Market under the hill, but the door opened only when its tiny guide arrived, and the old rules said, Wait for wings, not whispers. The pumpkin smelled of cold earth and candle smoke as he tucked his paws beneath it.

One night, a silver beetle clicked across the floor and tapped three times on the stem. Vesper nearly pushed the pumpkin forward, but he waited. Because of that, the beetle’s tapping woke a nest of dusty moths, and because of that, the moths whirled like ash and covered the moon mark on the wall. Then a squeak cut through the flutter: “Hold still!” A bat dropped from the rafters, fanning the moths aside with quick leather wings.

At last, the moon mark shone, the pumpkin’s grin lined up with it, and a narrow stair opened beneath Vesper’s paws. The bat winked. Vesper hurried down, spines prickling with music from below, knowing his quiet wait had beaten every noisy clue. If you spot the small wings above him, that is the guide who proved the old rule right: wait for wings, not whispers.
