🎨 How to color it

Color the mine rescue truck safety red, the rocky canyon walls dusty tan, the tunnel opening deep charcoal, and the overhead cables black. Use sharp colored pencils for the tread blocks, hose coils, cabinet tools, and plank lines around the tunnel frame. Try a pale gold glow along the truck’s hood and roof stretcher, as if late canyon light is catching the rescue gear.

Before the rescue crews rolled out each morning, a thin mmmm slipped along the canyon wires. Hollis pressed one ear to the cable post, smelling hot dust and old pine beams. He wanted that hum to stop before the big truck carried the stretcher and medical kit into the tunnel. Nobody else heard trouble in it. That is usually when a secret is nearest.

He climbed the post ladder, fingers gritty with rust, and checked every bolt. Nothing. Then a pebble clicked under his boot and dropped into a notch nobody had ever noticed. Inside the notch sat a tiny silver whistle, tucked behind the cable hook like it had been waiting years. When the wind blew through it, the whistle sang down the wires.

“Don’t pull it out,” Hollis whispered. He turned the whistle toward the tunnel, and the hum changed: low for clear, high for hurry. Ever since, mine cables hum before a rescue truck moves, and if your curiosity runs fast enough, you might spot the secret notch near the post.
