🎨 How to color it

Layer the rescue submarine in safety orange and deep teal, the porthole rims in brass gold, the fish in silver blue, and the coral in rosy pinks. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny zentangle panels inside the hull, then switch to smooth side-strokes for the long seaweed ribbons and open water. Try making the sonar rings fade from bright aqua to pale turquoise so the signal feels like it is pulsing through the reef.

Between the blue weeds, Calla pressed brass foil onto the little rescue sub’s chart board, making a game she called Spiral-Send. Each hand-cut ring had to match a hum from the sonar: low meant wide, high meant tight. The cabin smelled of warm metal and wax pencil, and her fingertips shone with glue as the reef slid past in green stripes.

She sent the first spiral. Ping—three silver fish turned. She sent the second. Ping-ping—the sea fans trembled like open hands. Calla laughed and added one crooked ring because crooked things felt fast.

Then the coral answered. Not with a warning, but with bubbles rising in perfect circles around the portholes, copying every spiral she had made. Her game had become a reef conversation. Calla tucked the sticky chart beside the glass, proud of the bright, messy rings her own hands had started, while the blue weeds waved back at Spiral-Send.
