🎨 How to color it

Layer emerald and deep teal over the dragon’s scales, use warm ivory on the horns and claws, and make the rune-filled border antique gold with tiny silver stars. Because the wings, tail spiral, and border are packed with narrow zentangle bands, use sharp pencils and color one small pattern section at a time. Try a subtle shift from teal near the dragon’s head to blue-violet along the curled tail so the spiral feels like it is quietly turning.

Every evening, Vesper sharpened a crow-quill with one claw and added exactly seven curls to the prank-ring she was making by hand. The alcove smelled of lamp soot, hot wax, and the sharp iron tang of ink; she wanted the ring finished before moonrise, so she could hang it over the door and make every serious visitor bow to a doodled mustache.

Until one day, a fleck of pepper drifted from her sandwich into the wet line. Vesper sneezed. The unfinished runes woke with a papery snicker and began hopping off the circle, stamping tiny spectacles on her stool, her teacup, even her left horn. Because of that, she had to chase them with her tail before the ink dried; because of that, the tail curved into a clean spiral, catching each runaway mark like beads on thread.

At last Vesper pressed the final curl closed with her own thumb, warm and black with ink. The ring settled, the lamp hissed, and the alcove door politely grew a mustache anyway. Vesper admired the smudges on her claws and added an eighth curl, just because she had made it herself.
