Real castles were not just royal homes; they were defensive buildings designed to protect people, food, and treasure. Early medieval castles in Europe often began as motte-and-bailey forts, with a raised earth mound, a wooden tower, and a fenced courtyard. Later, builders used stone because it resisted fire and lasted longer than timber. Many castle details you see in coloring pages had jobs. Crenellations, the toothlike tops of walls, let defenders duck behind stone and look out through gaps. Arrow slits were narrow on the outside but wider inside so archers could aim. A moat did not always hold water; some were dry ditches that made walls harder to reach.
Coloring tips
Start with a castle palette: cool limestone gray for walls, sandy beige for worn blocks, charcoal for shadowed arrow slits, warm brown for the drawbridge and doors, blue-gray for slate roofs, black iron for the portcullis, moss green for ivy, and red, gold, or royal blue for flags. For rows of stones, color lightly first, then shade the lower edge of each block so the wall looks stacked and heavy. Keep the tower sides a little darker than the front to make round turrets stand out. For a fantasy twist, turn the same fortress into an enchanted castle: violet twilight sky, glowing yellow windows, silver moon highlights, and a banner bearing a dragon, unicorn, or tiny wizard emblem.
