🎨 How to color it

Give the knight’s armor a bright silver, the horse a chestnut brown, the castle stones a warm gray, and the waving flags royal blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny banners, confetti, and brick patches, then fill the larger towers and road with smoother strokes. Try making the falling stars gold and the zigzag horse blanket red so the parade feels extra festive against the gray gate.

In the tack room, where leather smelled warm and dusty, Fenna rubbed her father’s tiny brass whistle until it shone like a trapped sunbeam. She wanted to ride out beside Sir Halver when he returned from the mist fields, but the castle gate had never opened for anyone quiet. It only groaned, clonked, and made knees feel wobbly.

The gatekeeper handed Fenna the horse’s ribbon reins. “One sound,” he said, “and the crowd will know he is home.” Fenna’s fingers shook. The children outside waited with paper flags, their whispers fluttering like moth wings. Fenna put the whistle to her lips, but only a thin peep came out. Then the old gate answered—creeeeak—almost like it was trying.

Fenna tried again, a little braver. Peep! Creak! Peep-peep! The towers caught the rhythm, flags snapped, and the children burst into cheers. Ever since, castle gates do not open in silence; they creak, sing, and call everyone close. Next time you see those wide doors, can you spot where Fenna’s first brave peep became a welcome?
