🎨 How to color it

Give the boy’s tunic a sandy tan, the soldier’s helmet and shield a warm bronze, and the winding road a dusty beige between green hills. Use chunky crayons for the big tunics, shield, and hills, then try a sharper pencil for the shield’s zigzag pattern and the spear point. For a fun twist, color the boy’s small stone bright white with a pale yellow glow so it looks like the most important secret on the page.

The story behind this coloring page

Tavi’s Pebble-Question Game — Under the tick-tick grasshoppers, Tavi invented a game: every pebble got one question. Read the full story →

Under the tick-tick grasshoppers, Tavi invented a game: every pebble got one question. He wanted the roundest pebble to ask the biggest question, so he slipped from the sheep path and followed the dusty road down the hill. Psst—he did not tell the goats. The road smelled like warm dirt and figs, and it nipped his sandal strap loose, but Tavi kept going, sling swinging bump-bump at his side.

At the bend stood Captain Boz with a spear taller than a sapling and a shield bright as morning. Tavi held up his pebble. “Which question fits this one?” he whispered. Boz bent close. “Ask what silence is hiding.” Just then, far across the valley, a shout rolled like thunder. Tavi’s fingers tightened around the smooth stone. He had gone looking for a game and came back with a brave question. If you peek at his hand, can you keep the secret too?
