Under the warm fern shelf, Fenn kept one empty cup beside his breakfast stone. He wanted a bluebell to put in it, so he lifted his woven basket, tied on his floppy ear-band, and stepped into the lantern greenhouse. Drip, drip went the glass roof. The air smelled like wet leaves and tulip stems. To reach the bluebell pot, Fenn had to squeeze past a row of speckled eggs, and one rolled into his basket with a soft clack.
“Who whispered?” Fenn asked. The eggs stayed still. The tulips nodded. He paid a tiny price: one muddy toe and a bent bow tie from crawling under the potting bench. There, where nobody looked, beneath the plainest egg, sat a silver seed humming, “Plant me near breakfast.” Fenn brought home no bluebell at all, but by morning the cup held a tiny bell-shaped sprout. If you peek into Fenn’s basket, can you spot the egg that kept the secret?
