🎨 How to color it

Color the dragon jade green with golden horns, make the bubbling cauldron pewter gray, and fill the potion bottles with berry purple, aqua, and honey yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the dragon’s many small scales and bottle labels, then switch to broader strokes for the wings, shelves, and stone floor. Try a cool blue night scene in the round window so the warm orange fire under the cauldron feels extra cozy.

Under the warm shelves of corked bottles, Quillan set himself a tiny challenge: brew one spoonful of moonlight before the kettle clock chimed nine. He had minty steam, pebble-salt, and three bubbles that popped like soft hiccups, but the recipe asked for window-thyme touched by starlight. The pot smelled like rain on warm stone. Quillan tucked his wings close, stepped away from his favorite hearth-rug, and climbed the narrow ladder to the round window.

The sill was cold as a spoon. Outside, pine tops whispered, and the moon made silver paths over the glass. Quillan pinched one sprig of window-thyme, but a sleepy crystal-moth shivered beside it, dusted in frost. “You first,” Quillan murmured, and held the sprig over the moth until its wings began to glow. Only one leaf was left for the brew.

Back at the cauldron, Quillan dropped in the little leaf. The pot did not make one spoonful. It sighed, shimmered, and sent bright bubbles bobbing toward every bottle on every shelf. Quillan laughed so softly the ladles rang. Next time you spot the bubbles over his cauldron, see if you can find the joy too big for one spoonful of moonlight.
