🎨 How to color it

Give number 7’s jersey a bold teal, the volleyball warm yellow and white panels, the net tape deep navy, and the far scoreboard pale gray with orange numbers. Use sharp colored pencils for the net squares and jersey folds, then switch to smooth marker fills on the larger shorts and court areas. Try a secret-light effect by shading the ball’s lower panels slightly darker, as if it has just passed under the gym lights.

Under the humming gym lights, Maris pressed a stub of blue chalk into her palm and drew three tiny marks on her wristband: dot, dash, dot. She had invented Chalk-Code, a game where each mark told her what kind of set to make before the ball arrived. From her usual spot near the back wall, the plan felt clever. But the code would only count if she tried it at the net, where the air smelled like rubber soles and floor polish, and every shoe squeak sounded like a warning.

She jogged forward, losing the chalk stub from her pocket. It skittered under the padding with a soft tick. Small price, Maris thought, though her hands felt empty without it. “Dot, dash, dot,” she whispered. When the pass rose, she lifted her fingers and saw, high above the net, three old chalk scratches on a roof beam—dot, dash, dot—left by somebody who had played a secret game before her.

Maris set the ball cleanly, not to win a point, but to send her handmade code into the air. Later, she made new marks on a scrap of tape and tucked it inside her shoe. If you catch number 7 looking up, maybe you can guess which beam answered: dot, dash, dot.
