Fun facts to share while coloring
Velociraptor means “swift thief,” and this dinosaur lived about 75 to 71 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous Period. Its fossils have been found in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert, not in North America. A real Velociraptor was much smaller than many movie raptors: roughly turkey-sized in height, though longer from nose to tail. One of its most famous features was the enlarged, sickle-shaped claw on the second toe of each foot. Scientists have also found evidence of quill knobs on Velociraptor arm bones, showing it had feathers. A remarkable fossil called the “Fighting Dinosaurs” preserves a Velociraptor locked with a Protoceratops, giving a rare snapshot of dinosaur behavior.
Coloring tips
Velociraptor’s exact colors are unknown, so build a believable palette from its habitat and anatomy: dusty tan or gray-brown for the body, rust or dark umber bands on the tail feathers, cream on the throat and belly, charcoal black for the sickle claws, golden or amber eyes, and slate shadows under the feet. Use short, directional pencil strokes along the arms, tail, and neck to make feathers look layered, then add tiny dots and dashes on the snout for skin texture. Deepen the curve of each toe claw with a crescent of darker shading. For a theme-specific twist, place your raptor in the Gobi Desert with orange sunset sand, windblown footprints, and a half-buried fossil bone nearby.
