🎨 How to color it

Try moss green and tawny brown for the velociraptor’s feathers, silver-blue for the four fish, olive green for the cattails, and soft lavender-gray for the distant hills. Use sharp colored pencils on the feather tufts and toe claws, then switch to longer side-strokes for the stream’s curving current lines. Add a pale turquoise-to-white shimmer in the water around the stepping stones so the fish look like they are gliding through sunlight.

Beside the quiet marsh, where cattails clicked like tiny wooden spoons, Niko pressed wet clay around smooth stones and invented Pebble Current. He wanted a game no one had brought him: a trail of stepping-stones that made the water curl, loop, and race. With his own claws, he nudged each pebble into place, sniffing the clean mud smell and listening for the soft shush that meant the current had changed.

Then the smallest silver fish bumped the bank and flicked in a tired circle. Niko froze. His game had made a wall. He lifted one stone, slid another, and tapped three little gaps with his sickle claws. “Try now,” he whispered. The stream slipped through with a new, gentle song, and the fish sailed between the stones.

Ever since, marsh streams keep pebble paths with safe little doors between them, because one young raptor built a game by hand and made room for the water to play. Next time you spot those curving lines, can you find Niko’s doors?
