Every morning, before the hikers reached Pinebell Cabin, Luca carved wooden letters on the porch and lined them beside the creek path: L-O-D-G-E, with arrows made from split sticks. Cedar shavings curled under his pocketknife, and the cold air smelled like smoke from the stone chimney. He wanted the first sign on vacation to be his, not bought from the ranger store.
Until one day, a marmot in a grass crown popped from the wildflowers, squeaked, and dragged away the letter O. Because of that, Luca chased it past the fence, dropping his arrows in the mud. Because of THAT, three hikers followed the wrong trail and arrived laughing at a sign that read L-D-G-E, pointing straight at a bush.
Finally, Luca nailed pinecones around the missing space, bent a willow twig into a perfect O, and tied it tight with string. The marmot sniffed it, sneezed sawdust, and sat like a tiny judge. “Approved,” Luca whispered. Next time you spot the smoky cabin and winding path, see if you can find where his handmade O belongs among the cedar shavings.
