Every morning, Pip paddled over the warm lagoon and counted bubbles: one pearly pop, two silver wobbles, three that smelled faintly of salt and coconut sunscreen. The two round reef fish always followed, blinking through the green light while Pip tapped each bubble gently. “Don’t burst yet,” Pip whispered.
Until one day, the smallest bubble did not float up. It slipped into Pip’s snorkel tube and chimed like a tiny bell. Because of that, Pip peeked into the tube instead of across the reef. Because of THAT, the fish flicked their tails and revealed a thumb-size door hidden inside the rubbery bend, where nobody ever looked. Behind it glowed a pocket of moon-white sand and a trail of bubbles running away into the blue. At last, Pip gave one slow kick and followed the shimmer, counting softly again; next time you spot the snorkel, can you keep the pearly pops from running away?
