Beside the warm sand path, Sela set her tote under the wooden chair and placed her flower hat on the seat. She wanted to hear the shore’s tiniest sound, so she sat very still. The waves made shhh-shhh. The clouds drifted like slow cotton.
A tiny shell near the chair clicked. “Wait,” it whispered. Sela waited through one salty breeze, then two. At last, the shell opened just enough for a sand flea to hop out and tap three bright beats.
