🎨 How to color it

Color the tent canvas sandy beige, the tall saguaro deep cactus green, the campfire golden orange, and the cliff walls rusty red. Use sharp colored pencils for the cactus ribs, boot laces, backpack straps, and tiny desert stones, then switch to broader strokes for the tent panels and sky. Try fading the sunrise from peach near the horizon to pale blue above the clouds, so the whole campsite feels like it woke up early.

Before the canyon warmed, a thin wind slid sand under Rafa’s socks and made his tent flap whisper, psst-psst. He had slipped out early with a dented silver tent peg in his fist, the one his aunt said had “heard the desert’s first secret.” Rafa wanted to know if that was just grown-up campfire smoke. He pressed the peg into the cool ground and listened.

Nothing happened—until the saguaro’s long shadow touched the peg. Then the little metal head hummed like a bee in a tin cup. “Turn the door,” it buzzed. Rafa dragged the tent around, stakes squeaking, until the opening faced the low bright rim where the sun was climbing between clouds. Warm gold poured straight inside, drying the damp blankets and waking the boots without a single scorpion surprise.

By breakfast, every camper in the canyon had turned their tent the same way, because curiosity travels faster than coffee smells. Ever since, tents in desert camps point east when they can. If you spot the open flap catching morning light, keep the secret: maybe that dented peg is still whispering psst-psst.
