🎨 How to color it

Color the turkeys with warm browns and cream feathers, the tall corn stalks golden yellow with deep green leaves, and the pumpkins bright orange. Use sharp colored pencils for the corn kernels and feather stripes, then switch to broader strokes for the path and pumpkin curves. Try making the maze cooler in the distance with pale blue-green shadows so the turkeys feel cozy and bright up front.

Every evening, Dara carried the little basket of place leaves behind her aunties through the corn maze, tapping one claw, then the other, on the packed dirt. She wanted to reach the harvest table without dropping a single red oak leaf. The stalks smelled dry and sweet, and their tall blades whispered shhh-shhh over her head—until one day the whisper answered back.

“Not that row,” said a voice as thin as a corn silk. Dara froze. Her cousins bumped into her, and the basket tilted; leaves slid like tiny boats. Because of that, she stepped off the usual curve to catch them. Because of that, the whole flock followed her into a path they had never taken, where pumpkins sat like lanterns and the air hummed under the husks.

At the last bend, Dara found a field cricket perched on a curled leaf, bowing his legs like fiddles. He had been echoing the maze so lost families could hear where they belonged. Dara tucked his leaf into the basket, and his song led them to the waiting table. Next time you trace the winding path, listen for the shhh-shhh that sounds like home.
