Each morning, Quill rode the first breaker past the palm shadows, listening for the sea’s low song under the slap-hiss of foam. He wanted the whole beach to hear it too, but gulls squeaked, fish splashed, and his board only thumped a dull wooden note.
One morning, the biggest wave rose glassy and green, and Quill’s tail bumped the loose fin beneath his board. Because of that, the fin popped open with a click, and a curl of silver shells spilled out, humming like tiny bells. Because of THAT, the wave caught the tune and carried it along its shining wall until every fish turned, wide-eyed, in the warm salt light.
Quill laughed so hard he nearly wobbled off. “Listen!” he called, and the beach answered with chiming foam. Next time you spot that loose little fin, keep the secret: the sea’s low song was waiting under the slap-hiss of foam.
