In the prism trenches, where light broke into cool blue shards, Ansel made a game of chasing questions. He would tap a bubble with his nose, whisper “Why there?” and follow wherever its silver wobble pointed. The game carried him past folded weeds, tiny fish with glassy fins, and currents that hummed like a comb in the dark.
One bubble would not rise. It trembled beside a narrow crack where the old waves entered the trench and came out bent into chevrons. Curious past caution, Ansel pressed close to taste the cold mineral water. The current slipped through his mouth, gentle as ribbon, and combed each smooth tooth into a neat little angle.
He did not bite; he listened. The trench sang better through the points, and every passing fish could hear where the hidden current turned. Since then, shark teeth have kept their zigzag edges, and in the prism trenches, curiosity still runs away with the first bubble Ansel tapped.
