🎨 How to color it

Color the whale shark slate blue with creamy white spots, make the four small fish sunny yellow, and shade the bubbles pale aqua. Use sharp colored pencils for the many circles and fin stripes, then switch to a broader pencil or marker for the shark’s wide body. Try a soft teal-to-navy fade behind the wavy water lines so the white spots look like little sea lanterns.

By the blue current, Orla set herself a careful challenge: she would count every bubble that rose before dusk. “One, two, three,” she murmured, brushing through cool water that tasted faintly of salt and crushed shells. Silver minnows trailed her, giggling when the bubbles slipped past her nose. Orla counted faster, but the sea kept making more—pop, wobble, shine—and soon her numbers tumbled together.

Then the sun lowered, pouring gold through the waves. Orla stopped chasing the bubbles and simply watched them sparkle around her. The joy in her chest grew too big to keep, warm as a secret pearl. She swished once, gently, and the shining bubbles touched her skin without bursting. Each one left a pale round mark, and every fin caught a row of soft lines from the moving light.

The minnows gasped. Orla laughed, and her laugh rolled through the blue current like a lullaby. Ever since that dusk, whale sharks have carried the sea’s shared bubbles on their backs; next time you spot Orla’s dots and stripes, can you find where the first counting game spilled over?
