🎨 How to color it

Color the shark slate gray with a pale silver belly, make the crashing waves deep ocean blue, and touch the flying droplets with icy aqua. Use sharp colored pencils around the many teeth, gill lines, and thin splash shapes, then switch to broader strokes for the shark’s body and wave bands. Try a darker blue-to-teal gradient inside the curling water so the leaping shark feels lit by bright sea foam.

Under a sky the color of wet pewter, Nico carried a tiny shell compass tucked beneath his fin. It was no bigger than a clam chip, and it did not point north; it pointed toward questions. When it ticked, tick-tick-tick, Nico followed through the storm channel, past ropes of foam and the green smell of churned-up seaweed, wondering what could make a compass shiver.

The water rose in glassy hills. Nico let one lift him, then another, until the whole channel seemed to breathe. The shell spun so fast it hummed against his side. “All right,” Nico whispered, “show me.” He burst upward through a cold white crash, and every drop around him flashed like a tiny mirror.

That was when he heard it: not thunder, but voices. The wavelets were tapping the shell’s old spiral, answering in clicks and plinks, a map made of sound. His compass had never been finding places at all; it had been listening for the ocean’s unfinished songs. Nico hung there, wonder running ahead of him, while the waves finished the tune beneath his tail. If you catch the spray around him, can you spot the moment the sea starts singing back?
