🎨 How to color it

Color the mushroom cap ruby red with cream spots, the cottage stem warm beige, the pumpkins harvest orange, and the oak leaves amber and russet. Use sharp colored pencils for the window bars, leaf veins, and curved gills under the mushroom roof, then switch to broader strokes for the open sky and rounded cap. Try a cool blue-gray sky behind the warm cottage so the little chimney curl feels like the first cozy breath of fall.

Every afternoon, after the wind combed the treetops with a dry shhh-shhh, Maeve swept the steps of her mushroom cottage and named each leaf that landed there. She wanted to invent a game so wonderful that the whole lane would stop hurrying and feel autumn at once. Her new rule was simple: when a leaf touched the doorstep, everyone had to guess which cloud had shaken it loose.

Then one day, no one came down the lane. The pumpkins sat round and silent, and the chimney made one lonely puff. Maeve played anyway. “Cloud with the curly tail,” she whispered. At that, three oak leaves lifted from the path and drifted upward instead of down.

Because of that, Maeve followed their shadows across the grass; because of that, the shadows joined into a tiny arrow pointing at her own door. She opened it wide, and the warm smell of cinnamon tea rolled out. From every bush and tree, neighbors peeked, smiling—waiting to play from the coziest place first. Next time you see the leaves by Maeve’s steps, can you guess which cloud sent them?
