🎨 How to color it

Color the apple trees with golden-green leaves, the apples bright red, the ladder honey brown, and the children’s sweaters pumpkin orange and sky blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the many small leaves and apples, then switch to broader strokes for the open clouds and grass. Try hiding one silly purple apple among the red ones, right where the girl’s hand is reaching.

Every afternoon after school, Pippa tapped each apple twice before picking it: tap-tap, twist, plunk into the crate. She wanted to fill the last empty crate before the cider bell rang, but the top branch kept holding one shiny apple just out of reach. The orchard smelled like grass, sweet peels, and dusty ladder wood. Her little cousin Zed hurried below with a basket, calling, “Pick faster, or the pie wins!”

Until one day, the highest apple sneezed. Because of that, Pippa froze on the ladder while three leaves spun onto her nose. Because of THAT, Zed laughed so hard his basket tipped, and the apples rolled in a polite little parade around the tree. Pippa waited, hand ready, while the sneezy apple wobbled again—ah... ah... CHOO! Out popped a tiny striped cricket wearing a leaf cap, tucked where nobody ever looked.

Finally, Pippa held up an empty cider cup. The cricket hopped in, the apple dropped into her palm, and the crate filled with one perfect plunk. Next time you spot the apple near Pippa’s fingers, listen closely for tap-tap, twist, and one tiny achoo.
