Under the zigzag bunting, Dax held his striped box very still. He wanted to hear the party giggle he had been promised, but the room only went rustle-rustle with balloons and crinkle-crinkle with paper. The cake smelled like sugar and warm vanilla. “Not yet?” Dax whispered.
He waited while confetti tickled his nose. He waited while the candles gave tiny hisses. He waited so long his party hat pom-pom flopped sideways. Then the little HAPPY BIRTHDAY banner on the cake wiggled. Out popped three paper stars with a squeaky “HA!”
