🎨 How to color it

Color the two cake tiers buttercream yellow, the big number 1 candle sky blue, the balloons cherry red, and the frosting swirls vanilla white. Use chunky crayons or broad markers for the wide cake bands and balloons, then tap the small dots and confetti with a different crayon color. Try making every other frosting dot rainbow-bright so the words “1ST BIRTHDAY” really pop.

Every day, Tessa clipped a tiny silver scoop to her pocket and filled it with just three sprinkles: tap, tap, tap. She saved them for the very last cake, the one with the tall number candle, because the scoop had belonged to her baby brother’s first cereal bowl.

One windy party morning, a red balloon yanked loose and whooshed under the garden tent. Tessa chased it past snapping ribbons and sweet frosting smells. The balloon string had caught on the cake table, tipping the tray of star sprinkles toward the grass. “Hold still, windy thing!” Tessa laughed.

Because she caught the string, the tray stopped sliding. Because the scoop was already in her pocket, Tessa quietly shared her three best sprinkles around the candle before anyone saw. When the flame flickered, the cake seemed to wink. Next time you spot that tall candle, see if you can find where Tessa’s tiny tap, tap, tap landed.
