Every evening, Flicka practiced standing tall on the striped candle. She puffed warm light onto the curly icing and whispered, “Steady, steady,” because tomorrow she wanted to shine through the whole birthday song without a wiggle. Then—crack!—two starry Sparkle Snaps leaped from the matchbox with zzzips and pops. They smelled like smoke and sugar and zoomed around her head.
Because of that, Flicka’s pointy top bent left. Because of THAT, the wax dots giggled and the plate gave a clink-clink wobble. The Sparkle Snaps shouted, “Blink with us!” Flicka had never blinked on purpose before. She took one small, brave breath and winked—flash! The Snaps froze in surprise, then burst into neat little stars all around her.
