The air smelled like wet dirt and peppery grass. “Tip, tap, hush,” Fenn whispered, because the old seeds sleeping in the mound did not know how thirsty they were.

Soon Fenn’s top leaf held a silver bead as heavy as a marble. He could have kept it and grown taller by morning. Instead, when nobody watched but the smiling sun, Fenn bent low and slid the bead into a crack beside the smallest seed. A tiny sigh came from underground.
