Every morning, Tully tapped three pond windows with his nose: tap-tap-tap, good morning! He stayed close to the reeds where the mud felt soft and safe. Until one windy morning, a buzzy hum shook the water beneath the far lily pad. Tully pulled his red hat low and whispered, “I can go one pad farther.”
Because of that, he paddled past the round stones, splash-swish, and the ripples pushed him sideways. Because of THAT, his shell bumped the far pad, and a flat pebble flipped over. Under it was a tiny brass bell, hiding where nobody ever looked, ringing for the pond house door. Tully nudged it with one brave foot. Ding! The little door opened, warm light spilled across the water, and his window-taps became doorbell taps too. Next time you see his small smile by the lily pad, can you hear the ding hiding under the pebble?
