Every evening, Elian crossed the prism chapel with a brass ruler, setting each birthday candle exactly between the floor’s blue seams while the windows hummed with late sun. He wanted the circle ready before the first bell, before wax warmed the air with its honeyed breath. Until one day, after the eighth wick caught, the chapel stayed dim at the center.
Because of that, Elian opened shutters, polished halos, and listened to the glass click softly in its lead. Because of that, a ribbon on the smallest unopened box lifted though no wind entered, and a hidden seam of light shone from beneath the bow. “There you are,” he whispered.
When he untied it, no present waited inside—only a ninth flame, small as a comma, rising to complete the circle. The bells began, not above him but all through the colored floor, and Elian stood exactly where the light had been aiming all along: between the blue seams.
