🎨 How to color it

Give the cheerleader’s uniform deep teal and ivory, the trophy warm antique gold, the giant pom-poms coral pink, and the starry sunburst panels midnight blue. Use sharp pencils for the narrow Art Deco rays, feathered pom-pom strands, scrollwork, and tiny stars, coloring from the outer edges inward to keep the linework crisp. Try a soft gold-to-cream gradient behind the raised pom-poms so the central kick feels lit like a quiet stage moment.

Behind the mezzanine drapes, Tess rubbed the small brass locket until its hinge warmed under her thumb. She only wanted to place it on the old trophy before the evening cheer, the way her mother used to before every show. The hotel smelled of beeswax and rain on wool coats; beyond the curtain, shoes whispered over marble. “Just to the pedestal,” she murmured, and stepped out.

The balcony lights made every gold edge seem taller. Tess crossed the patterned floor, paid for her courage with one lost pom-pom ribbon snagged on a brass rail, and nearly turned back when the orchestra below tuned into a silver shiver. Then the locket clicked open by itself. Inside was not a picture, but a folded scrap: Stand where the light finds you.

So Tess laid the locket at the trophy’s base and climbed the last narrow step. Her hands shook, but they lifted. The first cheer came out small, then round, carrying softly down through the hotel like warm brass. When she returned behind the drapes, the ribbon was gone, the locket was waiting, and its hinge was warm under her thumb.
