🎨 How to color it

Layer the pie crust in honey ocher and toasted wheat, shade the pedestal plate in warm ivory, and give the maple leaves burnt orange, the oak leaves olive gold, and the candle a soft cream glow. Use sharp pencils to follow the woven lattice strips, deepening shadows where one band tucks under another and keeping the crimped rim slightly lighter. For a mischievous harvest twist, hide one cranberry-red glint in the filling between the crust strips and echo it on the candle flame’s lowest edge.

Every evening, Quill carved copper plates until his fingertips smelled of ink, then rewarded himself by braiding one strip of pie dough straighter than the last. He had set a private challenge: a crust so neatly woven that even the candle would stand at attention. One night the cat sneezed flour into the bowl, the dough sagged, and the lattice crossed itself like gossip. Because of that, Quill pressed each mistake into a deliberate curve; because of that, leaves, acorns, and crumbs became his border crew. At last he served the wickedly handsome pie, proud as fresh ink, while the candle stood at attention.
