Every evening, Tessa zipped over the hilltop orchard with a basket of warm rolls under her cape, leaving them on quiet doorsteps before the supper bell rang. The rolls smelled like butter and rosemary, and her sneakers went slap-slap through the leaves. Until one day, a ribbon of wind spun down from the maples and sneezed, “Whoosh! I’m starving!”
Because of that, Tessa’s basket popped open, and the rolls tumbled into a dancing storm of oak leaves. Because of that, she chased the gust past a curly pumpkin, over crunchy grass, and into a hollow stump where a tiny wind-sprite shivered beside three cold acorns. Tessa stopped counting rolls. She tucked two inside the stump and tied a leaf over the doorway to keep in the warmth.
Finally, the wind-sprite puffed one gentle breath that sent the remaining rolls gliding to every doorstep before sunset. Nobody saw Tessa share her supper first, but the orchard smelled like butter and rosemary as her sneakers went slap-slap through the leaves.
