His backpack buckles clicked against his chest, and chalk dust smelled like rain on stone. He wanted to hear the first bell before anyone told him where to go.

Then, on the first day, the bell did not ring. Because of that, Pip listened harder. The ruler on the floor gave a tiny tap-tap. Because of that, the globe answered with a soft wooden creak, and the pencils in their cup whispered, shh-shh-shh, like leaves outside the window.

At last Pip lifted one paw and nudged the apple on the stack marked LEARN and GROW. It rolled once, bumped the desk leg, and the whole room chimed—clock, ruler, pencils, globe—one patient note. “I heard it,” Pip whispered.
