🎨 How to color it

Color the lion’s mane golden brown, the safari jeep olive green, the acacia leaves dusty green, and the distant cliffs warm tan. Use sharp colored pencils for the jeep’s tire treads, door hinges, gas can, and the lion’s whisker dots, then switch to broader strokes for the open grassland. Try a pale orange sunset glow around the round sun while keeping the clouds cool white and blue-gray.

The story behind this coloring page

Under the flat-topped tree, where the bark smelled dusty and sweet, Kito kept one paw over his blue bead. It was only clay, with one crooked scratch, but his little sister had pressed it into his mane before moving with the cubs. “So you remember the way back,” she had whispered. Kito wanted to keep it safe forever, which is why he never left the tree’s shade if he could help it.

Then a safari jeep rattled past, bump-bump, and a folded map fluttered out like a frightened bird. The driver did not see. Kito did. He padded after it through prickly grass, across hot sand that stung his pads, and up to the wheel ruts where the map had snagged on a thorn. A dry wind tugged at his mane. The road split three ways. The jeep had gone where the stones looked exactly alike.

Here is the secret part: no one was watching when Kito slid the blue bead onto a low branch at the correct turn. The driver came back, found the map, saw the bead shining, and chose the safe road home. Kito returned with an empty mane and a lighter step. Next time you notice the lion by the jeep, see if he looks like someone keeping a secret under the flat-topped tree.
