Every afternoon, when the painted canyon smelled of hot stone and cactus flowers, Rafi bounded to the Echo Gate and roared the start of the fair. His voice bounced from wall to wall—BAM, BRAM, BOOM—and drums, whistles, and paws answered below. Until one day, his biggest roar came back tiny, like a hiccup in a teacup.
Because of that, the drum tents missed their cue, and the kite racers tangled in a rainbow knot. Because of that, Rafi chased the fading echo through zigzag alleys of red rock, past dusty star-flags snapping in the wind, until he heard a tick-tick-tick behind the smallest crack in the canyon wall. “Who’s in there?” he growled.
A pebble popped loose. Inside was not a mouse, not a beetle, but a hidden music box packed with silver seeds, turning and clicking beneath the stone. Rafi roared again, and the seeds sprang out in bright ringing notes that raced over the fair. Everyone laughed so loudly the canyon shook glitter from its ledges. Next time you see Rafi’s mouth wide with thunder, can you spot the joy bursting out—BAM, BRAM, BOOM?
