🎨 How to color it

Color the polka-dot cake in bubblegum pink and lemon yellow, the three striped candles in turquoise, and the “SURPRISE!” box in bright orange with royal-blue stars. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny confetti, halftone dots, and banner letters, then switch to markers for the wide cake bands and big lightning shapes. Try a pop-art twist by making every zigzag burst a different high-contrast pair, like purple with lime or red with sky blue.

The story behind this coloring page

Why Surprise Boxes Shout — Behind the paper curtains, Orla tapped three candle stripes with one finger. Tap, tap, tap. Read the full story →

Behind the paper curtains, Orla tapped three candle stripes with one finger. Tap, tap, tap. She had invented a game called Brave Before Bright: count the flames, breathe in sugar-smell, then carry the cake to the pop-art stage where everyone waited. The zigzag decorations crackled in the light like paper thunder. Her hands felt warm and sticky from frosting, but she whispered, “One small step.”

Just then, the square gift beside the cake gave a tiny hiccup. Orla froze. The box was supposed to sit still until the song ended, but its lid trembled against a ribbon curl. She counted again—one, two, three—and lifted the cake anyway. When she reached the center table, the box sprang open with a soft boom of confetti, not scary, more like a pillow learning to clap. Across its side blazed the first big word any present had ever said: SURPRISE!

Everyone grew quiet, then smiled so gently that Orla’s knees stopped wobbling. Ever since that first brave cake walk, birthday boxes have saved their brightest shout for the moment someone takes one small step; if you spot the three candles, you may hear them whisper tap, tap, tap.
