Under the sugar hills, Darla carried a velvet sack through Echo Cavern, trying to catch the wild thunder candies before they woke the sleeping beetle-bakers above. BOOM rolled from one wall. ZAP snapped blue-white in the air. The cave smelled like burnt caramel and cold stone. Darla tightened the sack string, but a tiny silent spark drifted out from a crack and landed on her sleeve like a warm crumb.
“I’m not here to bite,” the spark whispered. It led her to a round candy stuck in a hollow, trembling with every crash. The candy had no way to hold the noise in; each thunderclap bounced through it and burst back louder. Darla could have bagged the spark and gone home. Instead, while nobody watched, she unwound the ribbon from her own lunch box and wrapped it around the candy in ring after ring.
The next BOOM struck the ribbon and curled inward. The next ZAP spun around and around until it turned into a bright, fizzy hush. Ever since, shock candies have worn spiral rings to keep thunder sweet inside. If you spot one with wide eyes, maybe it is still guarding Darla’s secret ribbon.
