🎨 How to color it

Color the players’ jerseys in navy blue, the water cooler bright orange, the bench warm brown, and the far goalpost sunny yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the helmet bars, cup stack, shoe cleats, and thin yard-line markings, then switch to broader strokes for the open field. Try a late-afternoon glow by shading the hills pale lavender and adding golden patches to the grass around the bench.

The water cart rattled like a box of loose buttons as Kellan pushed it toward the sideline. He wanted one job that felt truly his, not “stand here” or “hold this.” The older players had their routes, their calls, even their favorite spots on the bench. Kellan had paper cups, a squeaky wheel, and the prickly smell of cut grass drying in the sun.

At the break, the spout stuck. While everyone groaned and fanned their jerseys, Kellan ducked beside the cooler and felt under the cart shelf, where nobody ever looked because it was dusty and webby. His fingers found a flat tin tucked behind the cup stack. Inside lay a faded strip of field tape marked with arrows from the bench to the water, then back to the huddle. On the end, in tiny letters, someone had written: If you can find the thirsty ones, you are already on the team.

Kellan set the cups in a line down the bench. “Pass them all the way,” he said. The players did, laughing as the water moved hand to hand, helmet to helmet, until even the quietest kid at the end got one first. Ever since, water carts have stayed right beside the bench, where every player can find the way back in; next time you see that rattly cart, check whether it still sounds like a box of loose buttons.
