Every evening, Vera cut leather by the open workshop door, matching each panel to the hush of the meadow and the smell of oiled thread. Until one day, a groundskeeper she had never seen laid a blade of grass on her bench, curled like a tiny wave. Because of that, she carved the curve into the toe; because of that, more patterns arrived—fern, spiral, braid—until finally her own hands made a cleat that seemed to carry the field before it ever touched earth.
