🎨 How to color it

Try deep black-violet for the cauldron, acid green for the swirling potion, amber-orange for the flames, and pale silver-blue for the crescent moon. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny paisleys, petals, dots, and nested bands, working one patterned section at a time so the designs stay crisp. For a hidden-magic effect, shade the bubbles from green at the bottom to moonlit turquoise at the top, leaving one white glint in each sphere.

The cracked vial in Vera’s pocket clicked against her ribs as she left the almanac stair, where dust smelled of paper, rain, and old wax. She needed one moon drop before the tide tables dried blank at dawn. The moon furnace waited beyond the basalt ring, its flames whispering blue-orange over stones smooth as teeth. To cross, Vera fed the fire her brass page marker, the one her mother had bent into a crescent years ago. It curled, glowed, and vanished with a soft chime.

At the cauldron, bubbles lifted like glass beads through green steam. Vera held up the vial, but the biggest bubble did not fall. Inside it, a tiny tide pulled away from shore, carrying the missing numbers in silver foam. “Not a drop,” Vera murmured. “A message.” She uncorked the vial anyway and caught the bubble whole. When she returned, the almanac pages smelled faintly of salt, and the tide table wrote itself around an empty crescent-shaped space where her marker used to be.
