🎨 How to color it

Layer the sleeping fox in burnt orange and cream, the acorn caps in chestnut brown, the maple leaves in cranberry red, and the fern fronds in olive green. Use sharp pencils for the tiny leaf veins, dots, and nested spirals, saving broader marker fills for the fox’s large tail and back. Try a hidden glow by shading the circular space around the fox in warm gold while keeping the outer leaves cooler and duskier.

Under the curled fern roof where no jay could count his whiskers, Renlo set himself a private dare: before moonrise, he would tuck one acorn where even his own nose would have to work for it. The air smelled of dry oak and rain-dark bark as he slipped from his round bed of leaves, carrying the acorn carefully between his teeth. Halfway past the thorn plum, he heard a hollow tick-tick-tick: a field mouse tapping an empty seed cup, pretending not to be hungry.

Here is the secret, since you would have noticed it too: Renlo almost kept walking. The acorn was glossy, heavy, exactly right for winning a game nobody knew about. Then he nudged it beneath the mouse’s curled doorway and covered his pawprint with fern dust. No applause came, only the soft scrape of tiny paws and the nutty smell of supper beginning. Renlo returned with nothing in his mouth, circled twice, and slept deeper than he had planned, under the curled fern roof where no jay could count his whiskers.
