The brass spiral fit in Arden’s palm, dull as an old coin and warmer than the keys at their belt. Each Christmas Eve, they slipped it into the great ornament above the winter conservatory and listened for the first true laugh to wake it; this year, the glasshouse stayed hushed, smelling of pine sap, cold soil, and unopened lilies.
Arden left the snug boiler room and crossed the moonlit paths between orange trees in tubs. Frost clicked against the panes. To reach the hanging hook, they traded their last match to a lampkeeper for a ladder, and climbed in the dark with resin on their fingers and a secret worry in their throat. At the top, the spiral turned once by itself.
Below, one caretaker began humming. Another answered. Somewhere, a broom fell with a clatter, and the laugh that followed was too large for one chest. The brass drank it in, then poured it back as a soft amber shimmer across every leaf and ribbon. Arden came down without the match, but carrying a light no pocket could hold.
