Under the warm mantel, Dolly tucked her nose against a square box that smelled like paper, tape, and peppermint. She wanted to hide it behind the tree before anyone woke up, so her best friend would find a surprise at breakfast.
Tip-tap. Something rolled out from the shadow by the fire. A round ornament blinked up at her, its silver cap bent sideways. “I can’t hang,” it whispered.
Dolly carried her box across the prickly rug, nudged the ornament safe beside the hearth, and gave up the ribbon from her present to tie the cap tight. The box looked plain now, but the ornament shone like moonlight.
