Under the nursery garland, Pippa pressed one paw on her yarn ball and listened. Swish, swish, went the pine needles above her. Plink, plink, went the tiny ornaments on the little tree. She had so much Christmas gladness in her chest that her whiskers trembled.
She rolled the yarn across the starry rug, slow and round. The string slipped loose, then curled into loops beside the wrapped present. Something inside gave a soft, silvery ding. Pippa blinked. A tiny bell was tucked in the middle, shining where nobody had looked.
