Between the painted eggs, Nell shook her carrot rattle: chik-chik, chik-chik. She wanted the tiny chirp in the meadow grass to answer, but the grass stayed still and smelled like rain and clover.
A round yellow bird hopped out from behind a striped egg. In its beak was one sleepy seed. “Wait,” peeped the bird. So Nell waited. The seed popped open with a soft pff, then another, then another, until little flowers climbed onto her bunny hood and rested by her ears.
