Before the midnight milk cooled, Vera set herself a grand challenge: count every curl stitched into the moon without losing her place. One, two, three—her fingertip traveled over cool ridges and petal bumps while star-dust smelled faintly of sugar. The loops seemed to multiply, quite rudely. Then a silver chuckle rose under her cheek: the moon had been counting too, not curls, but her tiny snores, and was already at forty-seven. Vera snorted, the moon added forty-eight, and both settled exactly where they belonged, among the loops.
